Work begins at Bodhi Kansas City, soon to provide affordable homes and services to South KC.

Community partners and stakeholders gathered this morning to break ground on a new development that will deliver both affordable housing and on-site services in midtown Kansas City.

Bodhi Kansas City, as it is named, is the second permanent supportive housing collaboration betweenlong-standing, local social services agency SAVE Inc. and affordable housing developer The Vecino Group.

“When you find partners who see eye-to-eye on delivering on behalf of the community—you hope to work with themany chance you can,” said Vecino Group Mission Ambassador Jordan Gibson. “SAVE Inc. has been a source ofgood for nearly 40 years, and we’re pleased to work together once again for Kansas City.”

Located at 3840 Jackson Avenue, the development is completely new construction of 6 two-story buildings that will provide a total of 45 apartments in a mix of studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom options. One building will feature ground-level amenities, including a community room with galley kitchen, an entertainment area, a business center, as well as leasing and services offices.

The community includes 40 units set at affordable income levels of 30 to 60% AMI. 12 of these units will be set aside for individuals with a mental illness diagnosis. SAVE Inc. will provide on-site supportive services for residents. The remaining 5 units at Bodhi will be market rate.

“In a way, we are building upon the success of Alhaven, our first partnership with the Vecino Group,” said Patrick McLaughlin, CEO of SAVE, Inc. “Bodhi—while completely different from Alhaven—will once again provide beautiful homes and deliver vital services toward the needs in our community.”

In addition to having greenspace and walking paths, the 3.76 acre site is within a short walk of Seven Oaks Park. The name “Bodhi” is inspired from Bodhisattva—the term for enlightenment—and both the location and design intent is to deliver calm and comfort to neighborhood.

“Bodhi will be an impactful community for KC,” said David Allison, Vecino Group Director of Development Midwest. “Through its deep affordability—as well as its supportive housing and services—this community will help to remove the barrier that many families, in need of a home, face.”

The $16.3 million development was made possible through tax credit support and HOME funds from Missouri Housing Development Commission (MHDC), Kansas City Housing Trust Fund, Construction and Permanent Loan from Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust, and Tax Credit Syndication from Raymond James and Sugar Creek Capital.Bodhi is set for completion by Spring 2026.
